Thursday February 1, 2007 We left Grand Prairie, Texas at 5:45PM and started driving to Iowa. We made it through Oklahoma and arrived in Topeka, Kansas at 12:30am and checked into the Holiday Inn Select for a one night's stay. Friday February 2, 2007 8:15AM Great stay at the Holiday Inn Select, very comfortable beds, super clean and WARM!!!!! Following breakfast at the Green Hill restaurant we located the nearest Starbuck's, and started on the 2nd leg of our trip. One of the goals today is to locate a store that sells heavyweight thermal underwear. Current Temperature is 13 degrees and we have just past the 400 mile mark of our 938 mile trip. 10:30AM Stopped at a roadside store for a quick break and a soda for Troy. I picked up a magnet for the fridge at home as a souvenier instead of getting a drink because I didn't want to have to tell Troy I would need to stop and use the bathroom soon after. Turns out it would not have matter I need to go to the bathroom anyway.....Now I have to figure out how to tell Troy I need to stop after just being on the road again for just 45 minutes. Hopefully I can hold out and it will be his decision to stop. This reminds of that part of the movie in My Big Fat Greek Wedding where the mother says " the woman controls the neck" . LOL! 11:30AM We were able to stop at another roadside store at 11AM and yes it was Troy's idea to take a break... PHEW! Anyway on to more important things, we were stopped by a drug interdiction officer who looks for people who are trafficking drugs! Wow! Turns out he didn't like the way Troy changed lanes as he was transitioning to I-435 Northbound in Kansas City. Mr. police officer ran the plates and since it was a company vehicle he decided to stop us and check out our plans of travel. The officer was direct, terse, but friendly. After a brief discussion about how to pronounce "Lake Okoboji" we were on our way again. I did get a great shot of the officer's car and flashing lights in my rearview window.... 3:00PM The shop staff is adding this line item. *** We need you back here!!! **** Hee hee (See Photo below). 4:30pm Well we are in Iowa and fighting intermittent internet coverage. It is now 9 degrees and nothing but farmhouses, cornfields and snow. That's it, no kidding. I will add pictures when I get to the Ramada in Spirit Lake and use their free wi-fi connection. We had a drive thru-lunch, nothing special. I spent an hour driving or so, but Troy has done most of the driving. We are stopping in Spencer for a minute. be right back. 6:00PM Ok we made it to the Ramada Inn in Spirit Lake. Woo wee is it cold. My nose hurts when I breathe in through my nostrils! Yikes! Last reading was 7 degrees. Troy and I went by the lake and the dive shop just to take a look at the frozen lake and saw the ice hut. Check out the pictures below. It's really beautiful in Okoboji and the lake and surrounding marinas, homes, and businesses are really nice. I bet it is spectacular here in the summer. We drove across the bridge and checked out the fishing huts on the lake for the ice fisherman. We have to run and eat soon because the roll up the sidewalks around here at about 7pm, even on a Friday night.
