Day Two

February 3, 2007

7:30AM We woke up to -15 degree temperatures and wind chills expected of -28. Troy and I are layered, and have every possible inch of skin covered. We will meet the rest of the crew at 7:45am for breakfast. The dive shop opens at 9AM for gearing up and then we will make our way across the ice to the hut. Our gear will be carted out to the hut by a snowmobile. We have protein bars and Gatorade for lunch. We will update as soon as we return from this long day of diving.

4:30PM WOOOOOOO WEEEEEEEE! We are back, what a day! We had a great breakfast to fuel up the for the day. The locals at the restaurant/bowling alley were just wonderful and were giving us encouragement for the day of diving ahead of us. The loved the fact we were from Texas and just told us we were crazy and laughed as we left.

We made it to the dive shop at 9AM to gear up and get briefed. We piled into the hut and drug all of our stuff into the shop. You have have to gear up inside and then they bring your assembled gear out on the 4 wheeler and trailer. The come back and pick up the divers and head out to the hut. Yeah it's cold but we are well prepared. Randy did a great job getting us ready for this trip. It's funny we are Ice Diving , it's hilarious when you do it in -4 degrees with a wind chill of -28! Condensation would build up on the inside of the hut from our breath and then freeze up on the North wall. You know I wasn't planning on talking about how cold this actually is because I am pretty sure you know that already  but I am hear to tell you. It is cold.

Troy and I were first on deck and we did a 12 minute dive to 28 feet. I will describe this in more detail when we get back from dinner at Tweeter's......

7:30PM  Here is a little information about the dives today:

Everyone had a free flow problem except me. We all had frozen inflators that caused BCD's to fill and so we had to detach them. We all used our dry suits for buoyancy. All the free flows happened on the 2nd dive after we had been out of the water. Tomorrow we will do one dive and then quick surface interval ( no standard on time between dives), switch positions and then start breathing on the regulator after you dunk your head under. Dives are no more than 15 minutes right now. We will probably try and do a little longer tomorrow. I have no underwater video yet. We just had to much going on and to much it get acclimated to. I used my new ice cap under my Bare dry hood on the first dive but at the end of the dive I guess I moved the cap to much and it went under my mask and then my mask flooded REPEATEDLY. That was tough since were about 50 feet away from the hole. I just held onto the line, kept blowing out and swam back to the hole. Water hits your nose and just is unbelievably cold. Water is about 20 foot visibility but it's kind of dark from all the snow on the ice. It's pretty bright about 10 feet around the hole. I came up from my second dive and Troy was tending line and I could see him so clearly, we waved at each other. That was the best part of the dive. I also got to see the 1938 truck that sits on the bottom of the lake. I exited on the ladder and plopped myself out onto the ice like an injured seal and realized almost immediately that my lips froze. I skipped the ice cap on the 2nd dive and was not able to cover my lips and cheeks. Uh can you say ...mistake? Will go back in with the ice cap tomorrow, just need to do a little trimming in the morning. Well, that's it for me. I am hitting the hay for tonight. It's cold and I am tired. Good diving, nice place, and great company. See y'all tomorrow! You Betcha!

Getting briefed by Pat Swanson, one of the owners of the dive shop.
For those of you familiar with female dive shop owners,
she runs the place , no doubt about it.

Our ride to the hut! You just pile on and they

drive you right up to the hut. The only way to go!
